Niger Children Hospital
Planning for a growing hospital became an opportunity to help more children receive the care, support, and dignity they need to heal.
Strategy
Opportunity
Niger Children Hospital exists to serve children with surgically treatable physical disabilities, providing both medical care and emotional support to children and their families. Since opening in 2010, the hospital has grown significantly, with ambitions to increase from hundreds of surgeries each year to as many as 1,500–1,700 annually.
That growth brought a larger question than simply where to add new buildings. The existing campus needed to evolve while continuing to function as a place of healing. Undersized physiotherapy spaces, limited waiting areas, infrastructure challenges, and the need for additional patient accommodation all pointed toward a coordinated long-term vision rather than isolated additions.
Response
IDD developed a phased masterplan that organizes the campus around the needs of patients and families. Outpatient and inpatient services form the heart of the site, with supporting functions arranged around them to make care easier to navigate and allow the campus to grow over time.
The plan also makes the experience of care more welcoming, especially for children. An expanded physiotherapy facility moves noisy procedures away from waiting areas, while covered, naturally ventilated waiting spaces and a nearby play area make arrival more comfortable. Guesthouses give families a place to stay during continued care, while a vocational center creates space for mothers to learn, create, and connect beyond the hospital.
Sustainability
Sustainability is embedded through phased growth and responsible use of the existing campus. Coordinated water, drainage, and wastewater systems help reduce flooding, erosion, and maintenance challenges while improving hygiene and resilience. This approach allows Niger Children Hospital to use its resources more efficiently and adapt its infrastructure as the campus grows.
Impact
The masterplan gives Niger Children Hospital a clear path for growth while keeping the human experience at its center. By planning medical care, family support, accommodation, and infrastructure as one connected campus, the project creates the foundation for Niger Children Hospital to welcome more children and families—while preserving the sense of care and community that defines the hospital.
