Mount Zion Teacher Training College
Creating a place where teachers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to shape the future of their communities.
Strategy
Opportunity
In the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, where conflict and isolation have made access to education and international support difficult, TMM focuses on solutions that are rooted in the local community. Rather than relying on outside resources, its work invests in people—training local teachers, building learning spaces, and developing knowledge and skills that can support more resilient futures.
The vision for Mount Zion Teacher Training College was born from this commitment: a dedicated 20-acre campus where teachers could be trained, learn from one another, and prepare to serve the next generation. The college needed to be more than a place for instruction; it needed to provide an environment where future educators could study, gather, connect, and grow.
Response
IDD envisioned the campus as a place where learning extends beyond the classroom into everyday community life. A welcoming entrance creates a sense of arrival, leading to teaching, gathering, living, and outdoor spaces that give students different ways to learn, connect, and grow. Distinctive pentagonal classrooms give the campus a recognizable identity, while the open-air auditorium, library, computer lab, outdoor study areas, and informal seating create opportunities for both focused learning and shared experiences.
Beyond academics, the campus supports the rhythms of student life through administration, male and female teacher housing, an outdoor cafeteria, and a basketball court. Together, these spaces create a connected environment where students can study, gather, eat, rest, and build relationships—making the campus not just a place for education, but a community they can belong to.
Sustainability
The campus responds to its climate through passive design strategies. Buildings use cross-ventilation and shading to encourage natural airflow and reduce heat gain, while carefully considered access to sunlight supports comfortable, naturally lit learning environments. These approaches allow the buildings to work with the local climate rather than relying entirely on mechanical systems.
Impact
Mount Zion Teacher Training College creates a setting where teachers can develop not only their professional knowledge but also the capacity to serve their communities. By investing in local educators and providing them with a place to learn, live, and connect, the campus supports a longer-term vision: teachers who can carry knowledge into classrooms and help shape new opportunities for future generations.
