LOP
Creating a place where people can step away from the noise of the city, reconnect with nature, and share meaningful time together.
Strategy
Opportunity
LOP grew from a client’s vision to create a community destination in the desert landscape of Wadi El Natrun—a place where families and young people could slow down, gather, and enjoy quality time away from the pace and noise of the city. Rather than simply providing a venue for events, the opportunity was to create an environment where recreation, hospitality, nature, and community could come together.
The vision called for spaces that could welcome both large gatherings and quieter moments: a main hall for up to 1,000 people, event spaces, dining areas, accommodation, and generous outdoor areas where visitors could spend time together.
Response
IDD translated this vision into a community-centered destination organized around gathering, recreation, and the landscape. A generous open plaza forms a central meeting point, with varied seating and a large fountain at its heart, bringing a sense of refreshment and nature into the desert setting. An open-air auditorium with a stage provides a flexible setting for events and shared experiences.
Dining spaces extend outdoors through an open cafeteria and restaurant area, allowing visitors to enjoy meals and fresh air together. Residential buildings incorporate perforated screens, domes, and arches that draw from the architectural character of the region.
Sustainability
The landscape also became part of the experience and daily operation of LOP. A significant portion of the site is dedicated to farming, with crops intended to supply the kitchen and cafeteria. Spaces designed around cross-ventilation reduce reliance on mechanical cooling, while the fountain is envisioned to reuse greywater.
Impact
LOP is envisioned as a destination where families and younger generations can pause from everyday life and spend time together in a quieter natural setting. By bringing gathering, recreation, hospitality, food production, and landscape into one place, the project offers people an opportunity to rest, connect, and experience a different rhythm of life in Wadi El Natrun.
