PCEA Chogoria Hospital
A long-term vision for a century-old hospital to grow with its community—bringing care closer together while creating room for the generations to come.
Strategy
Opportunity
For more than a century, PCEA Chogoria Hospital has been a place of care, learning, and service for communities around the foothills of Mount Kenya. Today, its 300-bed hospital and nursing college bring patients, families, healthcare professionals, and students together on a campus shaped by generations of growth. Yet this growth has left services scattered, journeys between care and administration difficult, and aging infrastructure struggling to meet rising demand.
The opportunity was to rethink how the campus could grow around the people who use it every day. Rather than simply adding buildings, the masterplan creates a long-term framework for a more connected, accessible, and supportive hospital—one that can expand capacity while making care easier for patients, work more efficient for staff, and learning more meaningful for future healthcare professionals.
Response
For a patient arriving at a hospital, finding the right place for care should not add to the uncertainty of an already difficult moment. The masterplan reorganizes the hospital around four connected areas of care—mother and child health, outpatient and emergency, surgery, and general medical wards—bringing related services closer together so patients can move more easily from arrival to treatment. A central plaza creates a clear point of orientation, while the chapel remains at the heart of the campus, preserving a familiar place of meaning and comfort as the hospital evolves.
The transformation is designed to happen gradually, allowing the hospital to remain operational as new facilities are introduced. Services can move into their new homes in phases, expanding capacity and improving the patient experience without disrupting ongoing care. The result is a hospital that can grow and adapt while making each journey through it feel clearer, calmer, and more dignified.
Sustainability
Reliable care depends on the systems that keep a hospital running every day. The strategy strengthens water, wastewater, stormwater, and energy systems while making better use of existing solar power, creating more reliable and efficient operations. A phased approach allows these improvements to grow with the hospital’s needs and resources, supporting the community today while preparing for the future.
Impact
The masterplan enables PCEA Chogoria to grow while keeping its community at the heart of care. Patients and families gain clearer, more connected journeys, while staff and nursing students gain spaces that can grow with their needs. Building on more than a century of service, the campus is prepared to continue caring, teaching, and growing alongside the community for generations to come.
