MME Grace Vision Campus
A growing healthcare campus designed to help Grace Vision care for more people, expand the services it can offer, and prepare for needs that will continue to evolve.
Strategy
Opportunity
MME Grace Vision was established around a simple but ambitious purpose: making eye care more accessible to people in Eswatini and the surrounding region. In only a few years, that work had grown beyond ophthalmology to include partnerships supporting ENT and orthopedic surgery, therapy for children with disabilities, outreach to remote patients, and the training of future ophthalmologists.
That growth was beginning to exceed what the existing facilities could comfortably support. The eye clinic alone was receiving 150–200 patients each week, while surgery days could include 15 procedures. Spaces were undersized, and Grace Vision needed a way to expand without committing to an unrealistic single-stage development. The opportunity was therefore larger than designing additional clinical buildings: it was to establish a practical framework through which the campus—and the care it provides—could grow over time.
Response
The masterplan gives Grace Vision a flexible path for growth, allowing the campus to expand in phases without disrupting care. From arrival, the patient experience shapes the campus, bringing registration, optometry, amenities, vendors, and a generous covered waiting area together before a central boulevard leads to the clinics.
Spaces throughout the campus make care feel more welcoming and dignified. A Swazi- and Mozambican-inspired boma gives families a place to gather and support one another, while sensory gardens allow visually impaired patients to experience the landscape through touch, sound, and scent. Clear clinical journeys and separated staff and service routes further support comfort, privacy, and safe care.
Sustainability
Environmental resilience is designed around people, helping patients, families, and staff stay comfortable and supported in changing conditions. Shaded, naturally ventilated spaces, along with solar power, water storage, and backup systems, help the hospital remain comfortable and operational through heat, rain, and power interruptions.
Together, these strategies create a campus that is more self-reliant, comfortable, and dependable—supporting care when people need it most.
Impact
Grace Vision Campus creates a more supportive experience for patients, families, and medical teams, with clearer journeys through care, spaces to stay close to loved ones, and facilities that support treatment and training. Designed to grow one achievable phase at a time, the campus allows Grace Vision to reach more people while staying grounded in the needs, culture, and realities of Siteki.
