PCEA Kikuyu Hospital
Reimagining a century-old mission hospital as a connected, resilient campus where better care, learning, healing, and community can grow together.
Strategy
Opportunity
For more than a century, PCEA Kikuyu Hospital has grown from a single building into a campus of more than 80 buildings across two sites. While this growth has responded to changing needs, it has also left services dispersed, journeys between facilities difficult, and infrastructure under increasing pressure as the hospital serves a growing community.
The opportunity was not simply to add more buildings but to give the hospital a clearer future. The masterplan brings care closer together, strengthens connections between the two campuses, and creates a more supportive environment for patients, staff, students, and visitors while allowing the hospital to grow without disrupting care.
Response
IDD developed a long-term framework to help PCEA Chogoria grow into a more connected and welcoming campus. Clinical services are brought closer together, making journeys easier for patients and staff, while a new ring road organizes service traffic and creates the infrastructure needed for future growth. New medical facilities expand specialist care, while the future College of Health Sciences strengthens the connection between learning and practice.
At the heart of the campus, a green corridor anchored by a new chapel creates space to pause, gather, and find comfort. A café and conference center extend this sense of community through places for dining, learning, and connection. The campus is designed to evolve in phases, allowing improvements to happen progressively while care continues uninterrupted.
Sustainability
Sustainability is built into the campus to support long-term resilience and reliable care. Natural drainage, rainwater harvesting, solar energy, battery storage, and a campus microgrid reduce reliance on external resources, while shared infrastructure and consolidated buildings make better use of the existing campus. Phased development allows these improvements to grow with future needs while keeping essential hospital services running throughout.
Impact
The masterplan gives PCEA Kikuyu Hospital a framework to grow while keeping care at its heart. Clearer journeys, expanded specialist services, welcoming shared spaces, and stronger infrastructure create a more accessible and resilient campus for patients, families, and staff. More than a larger hospital, it becomes a connected place where healthcare, learning, and community can grow together for generations.
